..."A CUBAN WOMAN'S RESOLVE TO FIND AN AMERICAN DREAM"
This is a Bourgeois tragedy about how American politics and social values from 1930 through today have affected the life path of a woman from an upper-middle class Cuban family. Fidel Castro's Cuban revolution was the pivotal turning point for Estrella Vega and her young family. The Vega family moved to the US in 1960 and settled in rural eastern North Carolina after realizing that they would not be going back home. Learning a new language, establishing a totally different career and being the only hispanic residents in Beaulaville, created a different reality for this immigrant family.
Interwoven within Estrella's life story is her son's quest for the truth about the Cuban revolution. Why did the same Cubans who helped Fidel overthrow the Batista dictatorship run to the United States? Did Castro betray his followers? Or, did "American Interests" threaten the newly created government which Fidel was attempting to establish? Historical film footage, newspaper articles, and interviews with renown scholars help clarify the reasons why Cubans were so attracted to resettling in the US. Was this the correct choice? Did Cubans find the democracy in the US that they were so dearly willing to fight and die for in Cuba? These are questions which Estrella and her family consistently asked of themselves and are the basis for this documentary film.
This North Carolina documentary film poster is the start of a documentary film that I’m creating. I'm in pre-production mode at this time.
